Adams Family Pottery Marks.

William Adams & Son(s) (Potters) Ltd

Earlier names: W.Adams, W.Adams & Co, W Adams & Son

Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Manufacturer of earthenwares, basalt, jasper, ironstone wares under various styles from 1769.

Early wares made before 1780 don't seam to have been  marked.

W.Adams- Etruria Mark

W.Adams isn't ever recorded as working at Etruria and there wasn't another W.Adams so this mark is put down to Etruria being a pattern name. Please send information if any on this potterymark.

ADAMS & CO Potters Mark

This mark is impressed 'Adams' or 'Adams & Co' . These marks occur on various wares from 1785.

ADAMS

WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE

This impressed pottery mark details ADAMS WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE Mark in a circle wrapped around  a centred Eagle. 

This mark is dated to c.1804-1840.

ADAMS 

WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE

This impressed pottery mark details ADAMS WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE. 

Written in a banded circle  wrapped around a central crown. 

This mark is dated to c.1810-1825.

W. Adams & Sons

This is a printed mark for W.Adams & Sons

'and Sons' was introduced from c.1819.

This mark has the pattern name 'STONE CHINA' in the centre of a shield and is 

dated to c.1835-1855.

W ADAMS & SONS / 'W A & S'

These printed mark comes with various styles of different designs incorporating the name 'W Adams & Sons' 

Also used was the initials 'W A & S' .

These marks date to c.1819-1864.

W.ADAMS & SONS

This is a printed belt mark with feathers above the trade  name 'W Adams & Sons'.

'JEDDO' being the pattern name.

This mark dates c.1819-1864.

ADAMS 'WA & Ss' 

This is the printed belt mark with crown above.

 In the band is "Indian Tree" which is the pattern name.

This mark dates c.1819-1864.

Please note that a mark very similar to this with 'W A & Co' was used from c.1879 and after.

'Ss' being Sons.

ADAMS TUNSTALL

This mark is detailed SHANSHAI which is the pattern name and is an early printed mark which is pre 1891 and dates  c.1819-1864.

PALESTINE

This printed mark is detailed PALESTINE which is the pattern name and has an impressed mark for W.ADAMS which dates 1930 - 1940.

ADAMS TUNSTALL ENGLAND

This printed mark is detailed with the Royal Coat of Arms which dates 1890-1914.

TUNSTALL was introduced from 1896+

TUNSTALL, 

ENGLAND

This printed mark was introduced in c.1893 and was used into the early 1900's.

Arcadia being the pattern name.

Also note variations of this mark occured with instead of the eagle a crown was used on top of the globe, sometimes with or without TUNSTALL, with or without ENGLAND & sometimes both.

When ENGLAND appears on the mark it can be dated to 1891 and there after.

Wm Adams & Co estab. 1657 TUNSTALL ENGLAND

This printed mark was also introduced in c.1893 and was used into the early 1900's.

Inside the circle being the diamond registration mark.

Also note variations of this mark occured with instead of the eagle a crown was used on top of the circle, Sometimes with or without TUNSTALL, With or without ENGLAND & sometimes both.

When ENGLAND appears on the mark it can be dated to 1891 and there after.

Wm Adams & Co ENGLAND

These printed mark was also introduced in c.1893 and was used into the early 1900's.

Inside the circle being the Staffordshire Knot .

Also note variations of this mark come with or without ENGLAND and the company name could be either in the circle band or below the band.

When ENGLAND appears on the mark it can be dated to 1891 and there after.

This printed mark was introduced in c.1893 and was used into the early 1900's.

'GLORIA' being the pattern name.

when ENGLAND appears on the mark it can be dated to 1891 and there after.

These printed mark was introduced in c.1893 and was used into the early 1900's.

Inside the shield the pattern name above the Staffordshire Knot.

Variations of this mark come with or without 'ENGLAND'.

Also when ENGLAND appears on the mark it can be dated to 1891 and there after.

Est 1657 ADAMS, TUNSTALL, ENGLAND.

These printed marks were introduced in 1896 & were used extensively into the 20th century.,

Variations of the marks come with or without TUNSTALL with the type of ware below the potters mark for  this example 'Calyx Ware'.

RD677960  registration number for Chinese Mongolia was first registered in 1920 and the RD673892 registration number was first introduced in 1921.

ADAMS, Est 1657 , TUNSTALL, ENGLAND.

This Impressed mark was used on Jasper kinds of wares from 1896 and was used  into the 20th century.

KYBER TRADEMARK W. Adams & Co, ENGLAND.

This printed mark was used from 1891 and into the early 1900's and was sometimes impressed REAL IRONSTONE CHINA as featured below.

This impressed mark was also featured in the above mark as well as on its own and was used from 1891 into the 1900's.

This printed mark was also used from c.1891 into the early 1900's.

WARRANTED STAFFORDSHIRE W A & SONS T, ENGLAND

This printed mark which has a letter 'T' after the name which stands for TUNSTALL was also used from c.1891 into the early 1900's.

This printed mark was also used from c.1891 into the early 1900's.

W.Adams & Co, ENGLAND.

This 1900'S printed mark has J.H.R. & Co above MADE IN ENGLAND which was the wares made for the American market for John Roth of which the name came to be known in 1909.

JONROTH

The JONROTH mark was used continually from c.1910.

In 1892 John H Roth visited the factory of William Adams & Sons were he began a relationship with the factory which was to last 61 years up-to and after the takeover of Wedgwood in 1966. 

The JONROTH name is more associated with Adams than any other manufacturer and in 1967 Alfred Meakin supplied JONROTH WARE.

Wm ADAMS ENGLAND.

This printed mark was used from c.1913 and after. The Registration number was also used from 1913.

ADAMS Est 1657 ENGLAND.

These standard printed mark dates from 1914 to 1940.

Above the crown in the first picture being the pattern name.

This printed mark was introduced in the 1920's with 'Italian Scenery being the pattern name.

ADFAMS, TUNSTALL, ENGLAND.

 This impressed mark was used on Jasper ware in 1924 detailed by the printed mark 'BRITISH EMPIRE EXHIBITION 1924'.

This printed mark was introduced in 1950 and used there after upto 1962

.

This printed mark was also introduced in 1950 and used there after upto 1962.

ADAMS Est1657 ENGLAND.

This printed mark was introduced in 1962 and used there after.

Hollandia being the pattern name.

ADAMS Calyx Ware/Micratex.

This printed mark was introduced in 1962 and used there after till 1966.

Calyx Ware & MICRATEX being the trade names of which MICRATEX is the name for an extra string of wares introduced in 1963.

ADAMS Calyx Ware.

These printed mark was used from 1966 and there after. Calyx Ware being the trade name for such ware with Shalimar & Old Colonial being the pattern names.

ADAMS REAL ENGLISH IRONSTONE, MICRATEX, ENGLAND.

These are the printed marks that were used after Adams became part of the Wedgwood Company. These marks date from 1966 and onwards.

ADAMS LIBERTY & CO 1978.

This mark speaks for itself and is a printed mark from 1978.

Finishing Notes

AS YOU MIGHT NOTICE ON MOST OF THE ADAMS FAMILY POTTERY MARKS IT STATES IN THE MARK 'ESTABLISHED IN 1657', ALTHOUGH W.ADAMS' COMPANY ONLY STARTED IN 1769 .

THIS IS BECAUSE AN IMPORTANT LANDMARK IN THE HISTORY OF THE ADAMS FAMILY WAS WHEN ROBERT ADAMS & HIS SON JOHN OF HADDERRIDGE & BRICKHOUSE, ESTABLISHED THE BRICKHOUSE POTTERIES IN 1657. 

AT THE TIME THESE WERE THE THE ONLY WORKS OF ANY SIZE TO BE BUILT IN BURSLEM & DUE TO THE COMPANY OF W.ADAMS BEING FROM THE SAME FAMILY AS ROBERT & JOHN THEY DECIDED TO TAKE THIS DATE TO PUT ON IT'S WARES.
